From the discovery of the New World until the 20th century, little had changed with regard to the pearl market, until the son of a noodle maker, Kokichi Mikimoto along with Mise, Nishikawa and Saville-Kent - discovered techniques for culturing pearls. In 1916, round pearl production was patented by Mikimoto.

The technique of taking a piece of mantle tissue from one oyster and implanting it in another was perfected and patented by Mise and Nishikawa, and later bought by Mikimoto.

Mikimoto's cultured pearl was timely in the sense that the world supply of natural pearls had been decreasing due to overfishing, pollution and other more attractive occupations than the dangerous work of pearl diving.

Today the majority of rare fine natural pearls are now found through an agent, from important estates, or at high-end auctions.

Mikimoto and his cultured pearl historically changed the pearl market. Since Mikimoto's pioneering technique, many culturing techniques have been improved, and new techniques have been developed.

The Cultured Pearl defines today's pearl market and makes fine pearls affordable to all who enjoy pearls.
